Local Gamecocks DB target makes choice, but he’s not telling
Dutch Fork defensive back/wide receiver Bryce Thompson said Monday night he has made a decision on his college commitment.
What he doesn’t know yet is when he will announce it.
Thompson originally planned to announce his commitment July 30, but he has some unfinished school work, one more class, he hopes to complete this month. If he does, he’ll commit on schedule. If he doesn’t, he hopes to get the work completed soon enough to be able to commit by the start of his season.
Thompson said his final three schools were South Carolina, NC State and Virginia Tech. He had been committed to the Hokies until decommitting June 11, soon after attending a USC camp. Thompson said Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson are in regular contact, 2-3 times per week, and like him primarily as a defensive back though he could also play some receiver.
“Myself, I’d probably want to play wide receiver more, but anything to get on the field the quickest, it doesn’t matter to me,” Thompson said. “He’s (Muschamp) just throwing it out there that it’s a dream to play for your home state, that you have everybody that has watched you grow up and watched you play football. Honestly, it is a dream to play for your home state. I wouldn’t mind that. And he’s saying he has the best defensive back coach in college. I believe that also because he has the credentials.”
Thompson said he’s not hearing as much from NC State and Virginia Tech as he had been. He said whenever he announces his decision, he will do so with a gathering at his school.
Thompson said he’s also taking courses this summer that will allow him to graduate early.
