Gamecocks wide receiver target could grab spot in 2018 class this weekend

Sylvania, Ga., wide receiver Tyquan Johnson grabbed a South Carolina offer in early June, and it looks now like he’s going to grab a place in the Gamecocks’ 2018 recruiting class. Johnson plans to attend Saturday’s Spurs Up Cookout in Columbia with his parents, and younger sister and he said Tuesday night the possibility of a commitment exists.

“Me and the coaches want to see my parents come around the campus so they can like it, and we’ll just take it from there,” Johnson said.

He talks every day with Will Muschamp and receivers coach Bryan McClendon and he feels they are ready for him to take the plunge.

“It’s a chance, it’s a chance,” Johnson said. “If they’d have me, it would be great. I’d love it. I’ve seen the campus, it’s just my momma. You know, you’ve got to let the parents see the campus and make sure everything is alright.”

Johnson has not visited anywhere else this summer and he said at this point he’s not talking to any other schools. He said he’s already a full qualifier but will not graduate early so that he can run track for his high school in the spring.

So me of his other offers included Mississippi State, East Carolina and Syracuse.

Last season for the Screven County Gamecocks, Johnson caught 32 passes for 822 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Notes:

▪  Tucker, Ga., receiver Josh Vann will visit The Gamecocks on Friday and Saturday. Vann said a decision is not imminent and probably won’t be made until a couple of weeks into his season. He visited Georgia last week and said he goes back and forth between the two. It’s 50-50.

▪  Offensive lineman Dylan Wonnum of Tucker, Ga., said he will not make it to USC this weekend for the camp or the cookout. He has no visit planned anywhere for this coming weekend.

▪  Seffner, Fla., linebacker James Miller will visit South Carolina on Wednesday. He has the Gamecocks in his final eight along with Mississippi State, South Florida, Kentucky, LSU, West Virginia, Louisville and Oregon.

▪  USC offered 2019 athlete Jashon Watkins of Nashville. Florida, Oklahoma, Ole Miss and Arkansas are some of his other early offers.

▪  USC offered 6-foot-7 small forward St. Louis Jericole Hellems. He’s also picked up recent offers from Georgia Tech, NC State, Florida State, Boston College, Pitt and Florida.
