Two key defensive back prospects planning visits for upcoming South Carolina game
South Carolina football had West Palm Beach, Fla. defensive back C.J. Smith in for an official visit last weekend. For their next home game in two Saturdays, the Gamecocks currently are scheduled to host two more defensive back prospects, Israel Mukuamu of Bossier City, La., and Jermaine McMillian of of Miami. Mukuamu got his official visit for Oct. 7 with the Gamecocks confirmed on Tuesday night.
Mukuamu is a Florida State commitment but is taking official visits. He was at Indiana last weekend. Having started his career at Berkeley, Mukuamu has had a long relationship with the Gamecocks and he’s looking forward to seeing the program up close again on his official visit.
“I’ll just be looking at the scheme that they play and how I would fit in their scheme, and also how they want to use me,” Mukuamu said. “I really want to hang out with the players as well to see if I can potentially play with them. I know some guys on the roster already like Darius Douglas who was my teammate last year but that’s basically all. I already know it’s a great atmosphere there. I know the coaches pretty well and the people down there are great people.”
Mukuamu will bring his parents with him on the visit and their opinions will be important in the process.
“This visit would mainly be big for my parents,” he said. “They get to see who I could potentially be around and judge if it’s a good place for me or not, so that’s really the main part.”
Mukuamu has looked at visiting Louisville this coming weekend and he’s going to Florida State on Oct. 20. All these visits do open up the possibility of a change of heart.
“Getting flipped? I’m not sure,” Mukuamu said. “Anything can happen, that’s why I’m just taking my last couple of visits and putting it up all to God.”
McMillian has had an official visit set with USC for Oct. 7 for a while but he said he’s not heard from the Gamecocks in a few weeks. He’s waiting to hear back from USC before finalizing plans for that visit. He said the athletic director at his school told him USC had called recently seeking his transcript, which he said is in good shape.
This weekend he’s going officially to Central Florida. He’s also talking with South Florida, Ole Miss and Mississippi State.
Note:
▪ Shelby, N.C. linebacker Dax Hollifield of made an official visit to Florida State last weekend and he told 247Sports it was the best visit he’s ever taken. He did not call the Seminoles his favorite but he said the visit did change his recruitment a lot. Hollifield will go to Virginia Tech this weekend unofficially. He visits USC and North Carolina officially the first two weekends of October and returns to Blacksburg for an official on October 21st. And he’s looking at a visit to Stanford on Jan. 14.
