Basketball recruiting: USC offers 2015 forward; Tevin Mack update
South Carolina men’s basketball coach Frank Martin continues to expand the roster of 2015 targets for him and his staff.
On Wednesday the Gamecocks offered power forward Eric Cobb (6-9) of Baltimore, according to various media reports. Cobb just decommitted from Kansas State and has picked up a plethora of offers over the past few days. Some of the others are VCU, Seton Hall and Old Dominion.
USC, VCU and Seton Hall appear to be his top three at this point.
▪ USC missed out on Seton Hall transfer Jaren Sina when he committed to George Washington on Wednesday.
▪ Tevin Mack (6-5) of Dreher met on Wednesday with Texas head coach Shaka Smart, who visited with him in Columbia. Mack had committed to Smart when he was at VCU. Last week Mack met with VCU assistant Mike Morrell. Tuesday Kansas assistant Norm Roberts was in Columba to see Mack. He’s also looking at USC, Clemson and Georgia at this point.
▪ USC is one of the 11 finalists for Class of 2016 power forward Dewan Huell (6-10) of Miami. He listed on his Twitter page his finalists, in no order, as USC, Miami, Florida, Florida State, Louisville, Kansas, Notre Dame, South Florida, North Carolina, LSU and Maryland.
▪ Class of 2016 prospect De’Riante Jenkins (6-6) has been at his home in Santee this week while on spring break from his prep school in Orlando.
He had hoped to visit USC Tuesday and Clemson Wednesday. The USC visit didn’t happen because Gamecocks head coach Frank Martin was out of town, but Jenkins and his grandfather did get up to Clemson Wednesday for another visit with the Tigers.
“It went good,” Jenkins sad. “Coach Smith treated me and my granddad well. He just took us around campus. He showed us where the athletes do all their studying and extra work. And he took me to the gym and I saw a couple players in there working out.”
Jenkins had been favoring Clemson, but he’s drawing a lot more interest from schools now and he’s decided to back away from having any clear-cut favorite for now.
“I gave no favorites as of now,” Jenkins sad. “My family and I are going to take time with the process.”
Jenkins is headed to Indianapolis on Thursday for the adidas Gauntlet basketball tournament.
