Football recruiting notebook: Gamecocks show interest in Louisville commitment

Defensive back Baylen Buchanan of Suwanee, Ga., is drawing interest from South Carolina. After talking with recruiter G.A. Mangus, Buchanan (5-11, 170) plans on visiting with the hopes of landing a scholarship offer.

Buchanan has been committed to Louisville since June 2014 but continues to look around. He also has offers from Georgia, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Iowa State, Wake Forest, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Mercer, Samford and Texas State.

“South Carolina wants me to come on campus and spend some time up there,” Buchanan said. “I plan on getting up there soon. I’m looking forward to getting there. Coach Mangus just tells me about the vibe and how it’s a great university. Before they offer, they have to see me in the spring. He’s going to get down and watch me and check me out and get me up on campus and we’ll see where it goes. Hopefully they will offer soon. I just like South Carolina and their defense.”

Buchanan has visited Louisville and Georgia and along with USC he also plans to visit Florida, Texas A&M, Tennessee, NC State, North Carolina and others this summer. He doesn’t have any favorites and continues to evaluate the schools.

Last season at cornerback Buchanan had 32 tackles and one interception.

“Teams just don’t want to throw my way,” he said.

▪ Defensive end Emmanuel Walker of Lake Marion now has offers from Penn State, Georgia, North Carolina, Wake Forest, Western Carolina, Georgia Southern, Charleston Southern and Troy, according to his coach Chris Carter. Clemson recruiter Marion Hobby was through the school and wants Walker to come to camp. USC also wants him at its Showcase Camp in June. Georgia likes him and NC State and Miami are close to offering. Michigan and Eastern Michigan also have called.

▪ Defensive lineman Jabari Ellis of Lake Marion has offers from Miami, Western Carolina, Georgia Southern and SC State according to Coach Carter. Clemson and USC have talked with him about coming to camp.

▪ Running back Antonio Williams of New London, NC, committed to Wisconsin in December and said he remains 100 percent committed. USC had been in touch with him and wanted him to visit, but Williams said he’s not going to take any visits other than to Wisconsin. He rushed for over 5,200 yards and 58 touchdowns the last two seasons.

▪ USC commitment WR Kyle Davis of Decatur, Ga., picked up an offer from Ohio State.
