Top local Gamecocks recruiting target cuts his list to three

Westwood High School cornerback Cam Smith said Sunday night he has narrowed his focus to South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. Also on his previous short list were North Carolina, Wake Forest and Florida State. Smith remains on course to announce his commitment following his season opening game Aug. 17.

Smith has taken an unofficial visit to Tennessee and he camped at South Carolina and Georgia. All three remain in constant contact. He said he hears practically every day from USC’s Will Muschamp and Travaris Robinson.

“Been talking about getting me up there,” Smith said. “I’ll probably official visit to those three schools sometime in October and November.”

Smith said he might get over to see the Gamecocks for an unofficial visit this weekend since the dead period ends this week, but that’s not yet been determined.

He said he does not have a favorite at this point among the three schools.

Notes:

USC and Clemson have been in contention for defensive lineman Travon Walker of Thomaston, Ga., and Tuesday, he plans to announce his commitment. Georgia, Auburn and Alabama are the other three on his list. His only official visit was to South Carolina in early June, and he is a cousin of the Gamecocks’ Wonnum brothers. Travaris Robinson and Mike Peterson have been recruiting him for the Gamecocks. He also said Clemson has been hard on him with recruiter Todd Bates in regular contact. But Georgia also has been strong on him throughout and the Bulldogs have been hot on the recruiting trail in-state in recent weeks.

First Baptist High School running back Michel Dukes, who is also a basketball prospect, landed his first basketball offer from IUPUI. Dukes had planned to focus on football in college but said Sunday he’s not sure about that now. He actually returned to his AAU team this summer after originally planning to skip the travel season. Dukes did take an unofficial football visit to USC in June and he continues to hear from the Gamecocks.
