Gamecocks get face time with key defensive target ahead of weekend visit
South Carolina has put in major time and effort in recruiting Atlanta cornerback Dequanteous Watts, one of the Gamecocks’ remaining targets for the 2019 class. Will Muschamp is in daily contact and with his official visit looming this weekend, Watts had a school visit and home visit Wednesday night with recruiting Bryan McClendon.
“It was fun an he can’t wait for me to come down there this weekend,” Watts said. “I want to really see how the coaches and players react with me. I will have dinner with coach Muschamp, me an my family, and check out the new facility. Stuff like that.”
Muschamp wants to add a couple of more corners to the class and Watts has been a priority for him. He’s made sure Watts knows that.
“I feel like they trying to get some closure, but will see how things play out,” he said. Asked if he might commit on the visit, Watts replied, “No sir, I won’t.”
That’s because he still plans to visit Oregon the next weekend. The Ducks had a coach in to see him last Saturday and on Tuesday. Also, Louisville is making a late run and had a coach in as well this week. So, Watts is not pointing to a favorite.
“Right now, I don’t have a lead for anybody yet.”
Notes:
▪ On Wednesday, Muschamp paid a visit to the Miami high school of 2020 RB target Don Chaney Jr. He has offers from Miami (FL), Florida, Georgia and South Carolina among numerous others. GamecockCentral has reported he will visit USC this weekend. Chaney’s father played for the Gamecocks.
▪ Recruiters from Penn Staee and Alabama, both defensive line coaches, were in at school Wednesday to see defensive lineman Jaquaze Sorrells of Winter Park, Fla. The Alabama recruiter planned to visit with Sorrells’ mother later in the day. Muschamp and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson made an in home visit Sunday. Sorrells will visit USC this weekend.
