South Carolina tradition, NFL legacy appeal to lineman from football hotbed
Javion Cohen, a 6-foot-5, 270-pounds 2020 offensive lineman comes from that football hotbed of Phenix City, Ala. Clemson has had recent success pulling players from there (Justyn Ross, Ray Thornton) and now South Carolina is going give it a shot with Cohen. The Gamecocks offered him last week and he plans to visit Columbia this Saturday.
“I was very excited to get it,” Cohen said of the offer. “The school is very great and I like the tradition there. I also like how coach Wolf (OL coach Eric Wolford) has put a lot of lineman in the NFL, and it’s my dream to make it to the NFL. “
From his conversations with Wolford, Cohen said the Gamecock coach believes he has the potential to play the game on Sundays.
“He says he sees me going in the first round when he’s done with me,” Cohen said. “He likes my athleticism and my attitude. What really stuck out to him was that I looked him in his eyes and shook his hand when I first met him.”
Cohen also holds offers from Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Virginia, West Virginia, Wake Forest, Coastal Carolina and others. The USC offer puts the Gamecocks firmly in contention.
“The offer puts them high on the list for me,” he said. “Everyone is pretty much even right now, though.”
Cohen also will visit Coastal Carolina this weekend while on his visit to the Palmetto State.
