South Carolina’s newest coach gets from facetime with blue chip 2019 lineman

Winter Park, Fla., defensive tackle Jaquaze Sorrells took his official visit to South Carolina last weekend and got a chance to meet all the coaches.

Except one.

New defensive line coach John Scott Jr. didn’t start until this week, so one of his first assignments was to go introduce himself to Sorrells. Joined by defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson, Scott was at the school at 7 a.m. Thursday morning for his first contact with the major Gamecock target.

“They just visited and laughed and cut up between the two of them,” said Winter Park assistant Kit Hill who was in on the meeting. “It was basically for him to get to know coach Scott. As they were leaving, coach Scott said he would be back one day next week after he (Sorrells) got back from Penn State.”

From across the room, Hill said he could see Scott and Sorrells interacting and it appeared they hit things off well.

“Me and T-Rob were laughing and cutting up a little bit,” Hill said. “Coach Scott really seems to be a nice guy. He seems to be a stand up guy.”

Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt was in Wednesday to visit with Sorrells but he’s not interested in the Vols as he’s down to USC, Penn State and Alabama. He will visit Penn State this coming weekend and he’s scheduled to visit Alabama the following weekend.

Both Penn State head coach James Franklin and Alabama head coach Nick Saban have yet to make their school/in-home visits and Hill expects both in next week.

Notes:

South Carolina defensive line commitment Jahkeem Green of Highland Community College (Kansas) and Sumter will take an official visit to Tennessee this weekend according to the Vols’ 247Sports site. Green has been a Gamecock commitment since March. He did not sign early because he still has some academic work to complete. He’s not taken an official visit to USC though he did visit unofficially in November.
