Gamecocks go international with QB offer
South Carolina basketball coach Frank Martin has had success with players from Canada. Now Gamecock football coach Will Muschamp and quarterbacks coach Dan Werner also are looking to go international for talent.
They offered Class of 2021 quarterback Christian Veilleux (6-4 190) of Ottawa, Ontario. He currently attends high school in Buffalo.
“I was very excited when I received the offer,” Veilleux said. “I had a great talk with coach Werner and coach Muschamp. The first time I got in contact with South Carolina was around mid January. Coach Werner came down to my school to see me work out and throw in person, which he said he was very impressed with. They watched my film (Saturday) morning together and decided to offer me.”
Veilleux is a pro-style quarterback who passed for 1,700 yards and 17 touchdowns and rushed for 400 yards and 4 touchdowns last season.
“He (Werner) said he likes my throwing ability and my fluid throwing motion,” Veilleux said. “He was also impressed with the power I can put on the ball.”
Veilleux also holds offers from Michigan, Virginia Tech, Indiana, Temple and others. USC is his first from the SEC and the Deep South.
“I think they have a good program, and I really like the fact that they are an SEC team,” he said. “I’ve seen pictures of their facilities and I am very excited to get down for a practice.”
Veilleux has taken visits this year to Michigan State and Indiana. He said it’s too early in the process for him to settle on any favorites.
