New North Carolina coach Mack Brown has turned up the recruiting efforts in his home state, hoping to keep as many of the top players in state at home. He’s digging deep for defensive end Desmond Evans (6-foot-6, 245 pounds) of Sanford, N.C., but so are others, including South Carolina, which has a place at the table with him.

Evans visited the Gamecocks for two games last season and he was back for an unofficial visit the end of March. The interest in the Gamecocks, from his side of things, is real.
“They are going to be in my top ten,” Evans said. “They are cool, I can relate to them. Coach Kyle (Krantz), coach Mike Peterson and coach (Will) Muschamp, we have a group chat together, they text me all the time.”
Evans said the Gamecocks have explained to him they would deploy him in their “Buck” defensive end position so he can rush the passer but also be used in coverage. He said the Gamecock coaches like several things about his approach to the game.
“The way I play,” he said. “Aggressive. Smart. And good athlete. I finish”
Evans also has visited North Carolina, Duke, Virginia Tech and NC State. His top five will get his official visits and he expects USC to be on that list.
Clemson also is an offer and he visited there last summer. He said he’s been in touch with Clemson through texting and still has the Tigers on his list.
“If I go there, I can have a good chance of being successful down the road,” Evans said. “I know I’ll get a ring. I don’t really care about the ring. I just care about what I can do outside of school because that’s going to help me in the long run.”
Evans said at this point he’s not sure when he’ll make a decision or if he will sign early. Some of his other offers are Alabama, Ohio State, Penn State, Florida, Texas A&M, Kentucky and Mississippi State.

Last season Evans recorded 69 tackles with 25 tackles for loss and 12 sacks. He has 24 sacks over the last two seasons.
