Offer would move Gamecocks into top 5 of in-state recruit, teammate of USC QB

Myrtle Beach wide receiver J.J. Jones (6-foot-4, 190 pounds) emerged as one of the state’s top offensive players in 2019 and will be one of the top prospects in the state in 2020. His offer list includes North Carolina, Louisville, Penn State, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, West Virginia, Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, NC State, Tennessee and others. South Carolina has been showing a lot of interest, and Saturday, he’s coming in for a junior day, and he might leave with an offer.

“They would be in my top five if they were to offer me. Having a chance to go up there and potentially play with (former teammate QB) Luke (Doty) again, that would be one for the books,” Jones said. “Coach (Bryan) McClendon and coach (Bobby) Bentley came down to the school last week. They’ve been keeping in contact and they lined up me up for junior day. They said they like film and they just want to get to know me one on one. There are no expectation going into the visit, but we’ll just see what plays out whenever I get there.”

Jones said Clemson receivers coach Tyler Grisham contacts him via text on a regular basis and he plans to go up to Clemson for a game this season.

Jones was told by his coach that 13 schools have come through to check on him in the last week or so. Those include USC, Clemson, Georgia Tech, West Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, Duke, Wake Forest, Georgia State and Coastal Carolina. He visited Tennessee and North Carolina the last two weekends. He’s also been to Penn State and West Virginia.

“All schools are standing out to me right now, but you’ve got to slim it down sooner or later,” Jones said.

Jones, who also is a basketball standout for the Seahawks, plans to sign in December and graduate early.
