Recent visit ‘definitely elevated’ Gamecocks in eyes of Georgia receiver prospect

Wide receiver Derwin Burgess of Riverdale, Georgia was among the first prospects to visit South Carolina last Sunday when the recruiting season for the 2021 class could go live again.

Burgess (5-11, 177) and his mother came in for an unofficial visit to follow up on the offer he recently received from Will Muschamp. Burgess likes the Gamecocks based off the visit and will be returning March 28 for another look.

“My visit went well,” Burgess said. “I talked with coach Muschamp, the offensive coordinator and the strength coach. They told me I was needed there, I was wanted there really. They said they can see me play anywhere. That’s the good thing about me. They can see me anywhere.”

The Class of 2021 three-star prospect also holds Power 5 offers from Tennessee, Florida State, Indiana, West Virginia and Georgia Tech. Coastal Carolina also has offered. He plans to visit Florida State this weekend, but the visit to USC gave him plenty to consider regarding a possible future commitment to the Gamecocks.

“It definitely elevated them,” Burgess said, “seeing everybody and meeting everybody. It’s one thing for them to talk to me on the phone; it’s another thing for me to see it myself. They know how I feel. I liked it while I was there and they made me feel at home. The people are down to earth and genuine. It felt like home.”

According to MaxPreps, Burgess last season had 28 catches for 463 yards and five touchdowns. He’s rated the No. 77 recruit in Georgia for 2021 by the 247Sports Composite.
