Offensive lineman Will Putnam of Harrisburg, N.C., attended South Carolina’s Gamecock Showcase camp on Saturday, and he plans to return within a week for another look at the school and program.

He also will visit Virginia Tech one more time for the same purpose, and then, barring any other major offers coming he, he plans to commit to either the Gamecocks or Hokies.

“Just to spend a little bit more time with the staff,” Putnam explained about his reason for making a return trip to USC so soon after the camp. “Obviously we spent a lot time with them today, but just to get to know them a little more in depth. This is a four-year commitment and the university is going to carry weight throughout the rest of my life. Just want to know a little bit more about it.”

Putnam said he’ll be ready to commit in about a week to a week and a half if no new offers come in. He planned to talk with Virginia Tech’s offensive line coach Saturday night about a day for a visit this coming week.

Putnam, who is 6-foot-5 and 270 pounds, visited Vanderbilt on Friday but was told he was an inch too short for an offer from them right now. They’d like him back in game to evaluate him as a defensive lineman.

Saturday’s visit with his mom was Putnam’s first to Columbia and he was impressed by what he saw.

“I like all the new facilities coming around, all the new renovations and everything,” Putnam said. “They are building a new apartment complex for all the athletes. It’s just great. I like all the new stuff.”
