He’ll reveal his top 5 next week, and the Gamecocks have already made the list

Deltona, Florida safety Myzel Williams (6-foot, 190 pounds) has set Aug. 17th for his commitment date. One June 1, he plans to name his final five. One of those will be South Carolina. Williams visited with his parents in January and he left that meeting with the Gamecocks No. 1 on his list. That’s no longer the case as Mississippi State has moved to the front. But he’s hearing enough from the Gamecocks to put them on his short list.

“Since I went on a visit there already, they are one of the top schools,” Williams said. “They were on me a lot, but ever since the quarantine they’ve kind of come down a little bit even though me and T-Rob (Travaris Robinson) still speak every now and then. They still keeping on top with me on recruiting, that’s why they are still going to be in that top five. I’m not hearing as much as from the other schools that are texting me every single day and things like that, but we still talk.”

The visit to USC in January made a strong impression on Williams at the time. He got a clear picture on how Will Muschamp and Robinson felt about him and how he would be used in their defense. Robinson has continued to press those points in his contacts with Williams.

“I know how they feel about me as a player, how they feel about me and how I can contribute to their team,” Williams said. “I’ve already sat down with Coach Muschamp in his office and had a one-on-one conversation with me, him and my parents, so I understand the role I would play there. I understand what they see in me, what they expect from me. Just being able to have the conversation with them, that I didn’t have with any other coach that is recruiting me, is one of the main reasons why they are going to be in it.”

Williams said if he joins the Gamecocks, he expects to be a player Robinson uses all over the secondary.

“Being a versatile player, being able to play high in the box as a Nickel, it’s being able to be all over the field and wherever they need me to be,” Williams said.

Along with USC, Williams said he’s also hearing a lot from Iowa State, NC State, Mississippi State, Appalachian State, Cal and Louisville. He would like to visit Louisville and Cal if he can before he makes his decision.

Williams is a three-star rated prospect by the 247Sports composite and is ranked the 100th best safety in the country. He’s the 166th ranked player in the state of Florida. Last season he had 28 tackles and five interceptions.
