WR Larry Collins keeps recruiting options open as he sees more schools
Wide receiver Larry Collins Jr. of Lower Richland High in Hopkins will be in Chapel Hill on Friday night for the Freak Show gathering of prospects at North Carolina.
The Tar Heels are one of the offers for Collins, who attended South Carolina’s Gamecock Showcase camp last Saturday. Collins said he got some encouraging words from USC receivers coach Steve Spurrier Jr.
“He said I did really good and had good hands,” he said.
Collins has USC and Georgia high up on his list right now but wouldn’t call them a top two. He also likes Louisville. Collins said he won’t make a decision until after his season.
▪ OL Will Putnam of Harrisburg, NC, said he won’t visit USC for a second time until next week. He is going to Virginia Tech for a second time Thursday and will also attend the North Carolina camp on Friday.
▪ DB Devron Davis of Merced College (Calif.) took his first official visit last weekend to Colorado State and right now he has the Rams as his favorite.
“I liked it, it was nice,” Davis said. “The coaches are very nice, very outgoing to me and embraced me like a son. The players welcomed me. And the campus was very nice.”
Davis has been in touch with USC and spoke with recruiter Lorenzo Ward on his way back from Fort Collins.
“He wants me to be recruitable and come out there and see everything at South Carolina has to offer,” Davis said. “I don’t know if I will do a visit in December or in the summer.”
Davis said he’s also looking at Arizona State, Nebraska and Oklahoma for official visits. Nebraska was his most recent offer. Some of his other offers are Louisville, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Utah and Washington State.
Davis said he won’t make a final decision until December.
▪ DB Mark Gilbert of Fayetteville, NC, committed to Duke. He also has a USC offer.
▪ WR Josh Wilkes of South Pointe committed to Eastern Michigan.
