A busy weekend is ahead for South Carolina coach Will Muschamp and his coaching staff.
Along with spring practice No. 4 on Saturday, Muschamp will welcome more recruits to campus, including a pair of 2016 targets making official visits.
Defensive ends Mykelle McDaniel of Loganville, Ga., and Josiah Coatney of Douglasville, Ga., will make official visits. McDaniel (6-4, 240) has his decision down to the Gamecocks and Georgia and is expected to make his decision soon after this weekend’s visit. He had been favoring USC ever since he was offered by the Spurrier staff, but a visit to Georgia earlier this month moved the Bulldogs even with the Gamecocks.
Coatney, who is at Holmes Community College in Mississippi, made an unofficial visit to USC last Friday and enjoyed the trip. He’s looking to see more this weekend. Coatney (6-5, 285) is also scheduled to visit Ole Miss April 1 and Florida April 8.
Headlining the younger prospects who plan to visit USC Saturday is running back Chase Hayden (5-10, 180) of Collierville, Tenn., just outside of Memphis. He’s actually going to arrive Friday in Columbia with his father.
Hayden is one of the top prospects in the Volunteer State in football and basketball. He was the 2A Mr. Football and Mr. Basketball Award winner for this school year. He rushed for 2,631 yards and 32 touchdowns, had 251 receiving yards with four scores and 51 tackles with three interceptions and 12 deflections as a defensive back.
Vanderbilt and Mississippi State are recruiting him for the secondary, but USC and everyone else see him as a running back. Hayden said Gamecock running backs coach Bobby Bentley is in regular contact.
“He pitches to me that I can come in and play early especially with their back now and a lot of guys leaving,” he said. “He really likes how I can make big plays and my vision, my long runs and explosiveness. I’m not too familiar with the program and I’m looking to learn a lot more on Saturday, but I’m very interested and looking to learn a lot more about them.”
Hayden has visited Tennessee and Louisville and is going to Michigan next week. He also has offers from Arizona, Arkansas, Memphis, Purdue, Missouri, Middle Tennessee State and Texas-San Antonio.
