Wren quarterback Jay Urich was back in Columbia on Saturday for the Will Muschamp prospect cookout at South Carolina.

While the event was low key and low pressure from a recruiting standpoint, Urich got plenty of face time with Muschamp and offensive coordinator Kurt Roper. And he said the message they delivered to him was clear.

“They really like me and I’m their number one guy,” Urich said. “It means a lot. I really like the coaching staff and getting to hang around them I had a great time. It was more of a hanging-out type of day, building relationships.”

Urich (6-4, 198) picked up an offer last week from Southern Miss, the second major program to offer him besides USC. He’s also hearing from Indiana, Wake Forest and Tennessee.

“Those schools have not offered but are picking up interest,” he said.

Urich is maintaining an open mind about things and is not ready to name a favorite or a timetable for a decision.

“I’m just taking it all in,” Urich said.

Update on QB target from California

Quarterback Kaymen Cureton of Lawndale, Calif., who holds a USC offer, was offered over the weekend by Alabama.

Cureton has been committed to San Jose State and said while getting an offer from the national champions is big, it doesn’t change his commitment right now.

“I’m very cautious in my approach because at the end of the day it’s still business and still my future,” he said. “I want to give each university an equal opportunity and disregard prestige but find the right fit for me through solid communication, honesty and feel for environment, which is why I’m going to take all my trips.”

Cureton, whose grandmother lives in Beaufort, planned to contact Gamecocks recruiter Travaris Robinson to get an update on his position with the Gamecocks. He also has offers from LSU, Boston College, Nevada, New Mexico and Colorado State.
