California QB plans visit to Gamecocks
Quarterback Kaymen Cureton of Lawndale, Calif., has a grandmother who lives in Beaufort and he is going there July 23 for a family reunion. While in the state the San Jose State commitment plans to visit South Carolina.
Cureton reported an offer from the Gamecocks in April but hasn’t had that much contact with them between then and now. He has talked recently with quarterbacks coach Kurt Roper.
“Not necessarily much in regards to increasing interest, but just a brief introduction, and then Coach Roper and I had a conversation about the feel of South Carolina and the environment,” Cureton said. “He asked me how I felt I would transition and he said he would like to see me in person.”
The Gamecocks already have a quarterback (Jay Urich) committed for the 2017 class. Cureton told 247Sports that Roper communicated to him that USC intends to take two QBs in the class.
Cureton last season passed for 3,787 yards, rushing for 773 yards and totaling 34 touchdowns. He also lists offers from Alabama, Colorado State, LSU, Boston College and others.
Former Georgia DB could visit
Defensive back Johnathan Abram of Jones County College (Miss.) made the first start of his college career last September against USC when he was with the Georgia Bulldogs. The Dogs won that day 52-20, and as a safety Abram made four tackles.
Abram is now considering the Gamecocks along with several others as he considers his next college stop. A decision, however, appears to be a ways off. He admits he’s not put a lot of thought into this re-recruiting process.
“Honestly I haven’t looked into anything. I’ve just been having fun and working out,” Abram said. “Me and Coach Muschamp talk every day. He just texted me a while ago. He’s just saying how much they need me and stuff like that.”
Abram said he’s planning to visit USC “probably” on July 23 along with his brother Aaron, who also has a USC offer. That’s the day USC is holding its final social gathering of the recruiting season for targeted prospects. Abram said he likes Muschamp and his interest in the Gamecocks at this point is “pretty high.” He’s also hearing from LSU, Alabama, Mississippi State, Colorado State, among others.
Abram said he will visit Alabama July 17 and LSU probably July 21. He doesn’t expect to make his decision until after his season and he will be graduating in December.
Abram is a native of Columbia, Miss., and when he signed with Georgia he had Ole Miss and Louisville as his other top schools.
