Gamecocks staff, Frank Martin watching Texas point guard

The South Carolina basketball coaching staff spent a lot of time watching point guard C.J. Roberts of North Richland, Texas at the various stops this summer and they'll get a chance to see him up close and personal soon because he plans to take an unofficial visit with the Gamecocks in the near future.

"I saw Coach Clark and Coach Martin at a couple of our games in Vegas and I know CJ talked to Coach Clark yesterday ( Wednesday) and he and I played phone tag yesterday," said Roberts' father Craig who also is his head coach. "Fresno State and Missouri are the newest offers for him from Vegas and Missouri has been very aggressive."

Coach Roberts said he and his son are trying to take a little break from the recruiting world before resuming conversations about official visits. At this point it appears likely USC will get one.

"We like South Carolina," Coach Roberts said. "We'd love to play in the SEC. It's a great league to play in."

Louisiana Tech is another program coming hard after Roberts. He also has offers from Rhode Island, Rutgers, Houston, SMU, Alabama, Miami, Baylor, Kansas State, Illinois, Wichita State and Southern Cal.

His father said interest will remain high because his son had an impressive summer and improved his overall game.

"He shot the ball a whole lot better than he has previously," the coach said. "And he led. He was in those situations when he had to lead the team and he was the leader. He had to be the leader."

Coach Roberts said their hope is that he will find that comfort level and great fit at a school so the he can sign in November.
