Devontae Shuler focused on 5 schools for official visits

Devontae Shuler of Irmo heads back to Oak Hill Academy in Virginia in September for what should be a spectacular senior season.

Sharing time with a loaded backcourt last season, Shuler averaged 10 points per game in helping to lead Oak Hill to the high school national championship. He shot 57 percent from the floor and 41 percent from three point range. He also averaged 2.4 assists and nearly 2 steals per game.

The 6-foot-3 Shuler is regarded as a nationally elite point guard prospect. If he were playing his senior season in South Carolina he would be strongly considered as the state’s top prospect. Right now there is a decent chance he will play his college basketball in South Carolina because USC is one of the five schools he plans to schedule for an official visit.

Shuler said Monday afternoon the Gamecocks, Southern Cal, Western Kentucky, Louisville and Oklahoma State are the five official visits he is planning to make and he will set the dates soon. These five came from a top 10 list that also included North Carolina, Texas, Ole Miss, Miami and Kentucky.

Shuler has been to USC several times and said he might drop in at the school again on Tuesday. He feels good about the way things have been developing between him and head coach Frank Martin.

“I have a good relationship with the Gamecocks and Frank,” Shuler said. “He says he likes how I play on both ends of the court. They have a good conference to play in. Frank plays most everybody on the team and I like his style of play.”

Shuler is one of two guards with in-state ties Martin is recruiting at this point. He also has an offer out to point guard Ja Morant of Crestwood.
