Dawn Staley getting another McDonald’s All-American as Gamecock signee picks up honor

For the third year in a row, South Carolina women’s basketball will be represented in the McDonald’s All-American Game.

Guard Eniya Russell, who committed and signed with Dawn Staley’s Gamecocks back in November, was named to the 24-player roster on Thursday.

Russell, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, is ranked No. 43 in her class by ESPN, No. 39 by Prospects Nation and No. 49 by All Star Girls Report. As a junior, Russell was named first-team All-Metro by the Baltimore Sun, averaging 20 points, five rebounds and five assists per game. For her senior season, she transferred to a new school and has helped lead Pallotti to a top-10 ranking in the Washington Post, putting up big numbers along the way.

Russell is the fifth Gamecock signee to pick up the honor in the past three years — sophomore point guard Destanni Henderson, freshman forward Aliyah Boston, freshman wing Brea Beal and freshman point guard Zia Cooke all participated in the historic showcase game. Guard Destiny Littleton, who transferred to USC this past offseason from Texas and is sitting out the season, also played in 2017 game.

The 2020 McDonald’s All-American Game will be played in Houston on April 1.

Since a girls’ All-American game was added in 2002, 12 players who have suited up for the Gamecocks at some point have played in it — Cooke, Boston, Beal, Henderson, Littleton, A’ja Wilson, Bianca Cuevas-Moore, Alaina Coates, Jatarie White (transferred to Texas), Kelsey Bone (transferred to Texas A&M), Te’a Cooper (transferred from Tennessee, transferred to Baylor) and Kaela Davis (transferred from Georgia Tech).
