Gamecocks star Ty Harris named a finalist for top national player of the year award

South Carolina star Tyasha Harris continues to pile up honors.

The senior guard was named a finalist for the Wooden Award during SportsCenter Wednesday night. The award goes to the top player in college basketball.

Harris is one of five finalists and is joined by Lauren Cox of Baylor, Ruthy Hebard of Oregon, Rhyne Howard of Kentucky and Sabrina Ionescu of Oregon.

Harris was named a finalist for all three national player of the year awards. She also won the Dawn Staley Award, which recognizes the player who exemplifies the skills that Staley possessed throughout her career — ball handling, scoring, ability to distribute the basketball and the will to win.

Harris averaged 12 points, 3.5 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game in 2019-20 while leading the Gamecocks to a 32-1 record, including a perfect mark in SEC play.

Boston named freshman of the year: Harris wasn’t the only Gamecock to receive an award on Tuesday as forward Aliyah Boston was named the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Freshman of the Year.

The honor makes Boston the unanimous National Freshman of the Year as she has also been honored by ESPN and WBCA.

Boston averaged 12.5 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game this past season.
