Dawn Staley to be featured in Netflix series executive produced by LeBron James
The start of the college basketball season may still be unclear, but South Carolina women’s basketball fans can still watch Dawn Staley on their TVs in a few weeks anyway.
Streaming giant Netflix dropped the trailer and release date for its upcoming docuseries “The Playbook” on Thursday, and Gamecock fans will recognize landmarks like Colonial Life Arena and Carolina Coliseum in it, as Staley explains in voiceover that “if you’re willing to be patient, you’re going to be successful.”
The full series, which features five 30-minute episodes on legendary coaches across sports, will be released Sept. 22, according to PopSugar. Staley, along with NBA coach Doc Rivers, U.S. women’s national soccer team coach Jill Ellis, the English Premier League’s José Mourinho and Serena Williams’ famed tennis coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, will be profiled and interviewed about how she’s reached the success she has had.
The series is being produced in part by SpringHill Company, the production company started by basketball great LeBron James and his longtime business partner, Maverick Carter. James and Carter are both credited on the series as executive producers.

This will be the second documentary program Staley will be participating in this offseason — ESPN and the SEC Network aired “For The Culture,” a behind-the-scenes look at South Carolina’s impressive 2019-20 season, back in May.
The Gamecocks finished the year ranked No. 1 in both the AP and coaches poll with a 32-1 record, but they were unable to compete for the national championship as the NCAA tournament was canceled due to the global coronavirus pandemic. USC is expected to be one of the favorites for the No. 1 ranking and a national championship in the 2020-21 season.
