State of the South Carolina Gamecocks

South Carolina won its first three games of the 2021-22 season in dominant fashion. The Gamecocks opened the season with a top-five win over No. 5 N.C. State in Raleigh and tallied strong wins over South Dakota in Sioux Falls and Clemson at home.

The Gamecocks have yet to trail on the road and have held their opponents to 47.7 points per game this season. All-American forward Aliyah Boston picked up where she left off last season on the defensive end, totaling 10 blocks through USC’s first three games of the year.

Offensively, veterans Destanni Henderson and Zia Cooke have led the Gamecocks in scoring, with Henderson averaging 15.0 points per game and Cooke at 13.3. South Carolina has scored 71.3 points per game in 2021-22, shooting 47.9% from the field, 37.3% from 3-point range and 67.3% from the free throw line.

Battle 4 Atlantis Players to watch

1. Destanni Henderson, South Carolina: Henderson has provided an X-factor in South Carolina’s first three victories as both a scorer and a passer. The veteran point guard leads the Gamecocks with 15.0 points per game (10th in the SEC) and in assists, averaging 5.3 per game (fourth in the SEC). Henderson has also been clutch from behind the arc, shooting 63.6% (7 of 11) from 3-point range.

2. Paige Bueckers, UConn: The consensus AP All-American got off to a hot start in the Huskies’ season-opening victory over Arkansas. Bueckers scored a career-high 34 points on 78.9% (15 of 19) from the field to kickoff her sophomore campaign after earning last year’s Wooden Award, Naismith Trophy and AP Player of the Year honors as a freshman.

3. Sedona Prince, Oregon: Prince is off to an electric start for the Ducks this season, averaging 14.0 points per game on 59.1% (13 of 22) from the field. The 6-foot-7 forward has come up with 10 rebounds and two blocks this season, playing a key role in undefeated Oregon’s first two wins over Idaho State and Dixie State.
