‘I’m in’: Darius Rucker, USC President Pastides hint at concert after Gamecocks title
The country crooner says he’s in. The school president says he’d love to see it happen “right away.”
Darius Rucker, the country music star and frontman of Hootie & the Blowfish, has again teased that he is ready to play a show on the University of South Carolina’s historic Horseshoe to celebrate USC’s women’s basketball national championship. And on Sunday night, school President Harris Pastides nodded that he’d like to see the show happen soon.
Rucker first hinted at such a show on Friday night, after the Gamecocks defeated Louisville in the semifinals at the Final Four in Minneapolis.
“Yeeeessssssss!!!!! Let’s go@GamecockWBB and @dawnstaley!!,” Rucker tweeted. “We got POY and COY. One more win and unsay we have a party on the Horseshoe. Free show for the Natty. What say u Gamecocks?!?!?!?!”
Well, on Sunday night, Coach Dawn Staley’s Gamecocks secured that “Natty.” South Carolina downed rival UConn 64-49 in the national championship game. It is South Carolina’s second women’s hoops title. The first came in 2017.
In the aftermath of the game, Rucker again teased a show on the Horseshoe on social media.
Gamecock Central reporter Mike Uva interviewed USC President Harris Pastides on the court after Sunday night’s game and asked him about the possibility of a Rucker show.
“We want it right away,” Pastides said with a big smile. Uva shared a video of the exchange on Twitter.
Rucker responded to Uva’s tweet, saying “I’m in. Sooner the better!!!”
USC spokesman Jeff Stensland said Monday morning that definite plans for a show had not yet been set.
