Mikiah Herbert Harrigan released 2 days before WNBA season tips off
WNBA roster cuts continued Wednesday as former South Carolina women’s basketball stars vie to make rosters.
The league’s 12 teams are limited to 12 players each and must make their final cuts before the season tips off Friday.
Former Gamecocks Mikiah Herbert Harrigan and Te’a Cooper were both waived Wednesday, two days before the season is set to start.
Herbert Harrigan was cut from the Seattle Storm’s roster — she sat out last season while pregnant. She was traded in February 2021 to the Storm from the Minnesota Lynx, which drafted her with the No. 7 overall pick in 2020 and played her off the bench in all 21 of their final games in her rookie season.
Cooper was released from the Los Angeles Sparks after playing two seasons with them. She started 13 games in 2021 and averaged 9.1 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.4 assists, shooting 32.4% from 3-point range.
Former Gamecock Kaela Davis is no longer listed on the Chicago Sky’s roster but is expected to be re-signed, Winsidr’s Rachel Galligan reported Wednesday via Twitter. The Sky had yet to cut their roster down to 12 as of Wednesday.
Four teams — Chicago Sky, Dallas Wings, Los Angeles Sparks and Phoenix Mercury — have cuts left to make before the deadline. Dallas’ Allisha Gray and Tyasha Harris are the only former Gamecocks on any of those rosters, and both are Wings veterans with starting experience.
Six former USC players are currently on WNBA rosters, including 2022 second-round draft pick Destanni Henderson (Indiana Fever) and 2020 WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson (Las Vegas Aces).
The WNBA season starts Friday.
