ESPN ‘College GameDay’ coming to Greenville for SEC tournament championship
ESPN’s “College GameDay” is coming to Greenville for the SEC women’s basketball tournament championship, giving South Carolina a chance to appear on the TV show once again.
ESPN held “GameDay” this season at Tennessee for its matchup against UConn, and at Iowa on Sunday for its game against Indiana. The network originally announced that it would make three stops this season. The SEC championship will be played on Sunday, March 5 inside Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
South Carolina earned a double-bye in the SEC tournament and will begin play at noon Friday. The Gamecocks need to win two games to advance to Sunday’s championship.
USC hosted “College GameDay” last year for the first time in program history when it played Tennessee at Colonial Life Arena. That appearance ended an 11-year hiatus for “GameDay” from women’s basketball games.
Coach Dawn Staley in January said she wasn’t sure “what the big secret is” and that the event needed to return for a USC home game. Still, it will take place in the Palmetto State.
“I just don’t know why you don’t say, ‘Hey, we’re coming. I don’t care who they play,’ ” Staley said on Jan. 11. “We’re coming down to Columbia, South Carolina because they’ve created something that no other team has done.’”
