Fred Chmiel, longtime South Carolina assistant for Dawn Staley, lands head coach job
Dawn Staley is in the market for a new assistant basketball coach.
Fred Chmiel is the new head coach for the the Bowling Green State women’s basketball team, the program announced Saturday. He’ll be formally introduced there Monday.
Chmiel worked under Staley for eight seasons at South Carolina.
“My family and I are so thankful and excited for the opportunity to join the Bowling Green community,” Chmiel said through a statement.
BGSU is located in Bowling Green, Ohio. The Falsons’ basketball team was 31-7 last season, 14-4 in the Mid-American Conference and finished the season in the semifinal round of the WNIT.
He joined Staley at USC in June 2015, their third time working together.
Staley hired Chmiel for his first women’s college assistant coaching job while at Temple.
According to his USC bio: “Chmiel first impressed Staley in 2005 when the then-Temple head coach was playing for the WNBA’s Charlotte Sting, for which he was an assistant coach.”
At South Carolina, he was known for working with the Gamecocks’ frontcourt. Gamecocks star Aliyah Boston a season ago called Chmiel her “main squeeze.”
