USC Women's Basketball

No. 1 again! Impressive first week vaults South Carolina WBB in latest Top 25

The South Carolina women’s basketball team is ranked No. 1 in the newest Associated Press Top 25 released Monday.

USC climbed five spots from No. 6 in the 2023-24 preseason AP poll after convincing wins over then-No. 10 Notre Dame (100-71) and then-No. 14 Maryland (114-76) to start the season.

Rounding out the new top five are Iowa (2), UCLA (3), Utah (4) and Colorado (5).

LSU fell from No. 1 to No. 7 after dropping its opener against then-No. 20 Colorado, 92-78. UConn dropped from No. 2 to No. 8 after falling to an unranked (now No. 14) N.C. State team Sunday, 92-81. Iowa moved up from No. 3 after defeating then-No. 8 (now 9) Virginia Tech 80-76.

At the start of the season, South Carolina’s schedule included 11 games against ranked opponents in either the AP or USA Today Top 25 poll tied for the most among ranked teams. Six of the Gamecocks future opponents are ranked in this week’s AP poll: Utah (4), LSU (7), UConn (8), Tennessee (15), North Carolina (17) and Ole Miss (23). Prior to this year, the Gamecocks spent 38 consecutive weeks at No. 1 in the poll, becoming the third program to go back-to-back and wire-to-wire as the top team.
