South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley said freshman guard Tessa Johnson missed the Clemson game with a sprained ankle.

The team announced via X (formerly known as Twitter) about an hour before tipoff that Johnson would miss the contest with a lower leg injury. She was seen wearing a boot on her right foot and using crutches. Johnson seemed to be in good spirits, though, smiling with her teammates on the court during warmups and passing a basketball back and forth with MiLaysia Fulwiley.

South Carolina (3-0) defeated Clemson 109-40.

Staley said Johnson’s injury occurred during shoot-around Thursday and that she was being examined by a doctor after the game. Staley did not specify a return timeline.

Johnson is one of three freshmen (along with Fulwiley and Sahnya Jah) on USC’s roster. She’s averaging 6.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and three assists per game and scored. Johnson had 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists in Sunday’s win over Maryland.

South Carolina’s next game will be against South Dakota State at Colonial Life Arena on Monday at 7 p.m.
