South Carolina WBB freshman in transfer portal a month after discipline
South Carolina freshman Sahnya Jah has entered the transfer portal, the school confirmed Monday.
“Sahnya Jah officially entered the transfer portal today. It is unfortunate that her time with us was short, but we wish her the best in the next steps of her career,” Dawn Staley said through a statement.
The Next Hoops first reported the news Monday morning.
Jah was ruled out indefinitely on Feb. 8 “due to conduct detrimental to the team,” USC women’s basketball announced via X (formerly known as Twitter) ahead of its home game versus Missouri that night. When asked about the decision after the game, Staley declined to provide any additional details.
“It’ll be day by day,” Staley said of Jah’s long-term availability. “She’ll work towards getting a little bit closer to coming back, but it’ll be day to day.”
Staley was asked again ahead of South Carolina’s Feb. 25 game at Kentucky if there was any update on Jah’s availability. “No update,” Staley answered.
And when asked about Jah on Sunday after the NCAA Tournament reveal, Staley said, “We’ll release something a little bit later.”
Jah recently removed her Instagram profile picture, which had been a photo of her wearing a white South Carolina jersey. She posted a carousel of pictures on TikTok last month with the following written over top of the photos: “Maybe people could understand me but...I’m misunderstood,” with a heartbroken emoji.
“I (tried) man...” with a shrugging emoji.
The freshman averaged just nine minutes per game coming off the bench for the Gamecocks women’s basketball team. She had been seen in the student section at South Carolina home games since the Feb. 8 announcement and attended the SEC Tournament in Greenville last week, according to her Instagram story.
With Jah gone, the Gamecocks (32-0) head into the NCAA Tournament with 10 available players and nine in the first-round as Kamilla Cardoso serves a one-game suspension.
