Top storylines for the game

Clash of titans: South Carolina and UConn have been two of the best college women’s basketball, and the sport in general, have to offer. This year is no different. Both schools dot the Top 25 in several statistical categories and have multiple players (see UConn’s Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd, etc. and South Carolina’s Te-Hina Paopao and Raven Johnson, etc.) worthy of national awards and recognition.

UConn comes into the game with the No. 14 scoring offense, No. 3 scoring defense and No. 1 team field goal percentage in the country. South Carolina has the No. 5 field goal percentage defense, No. 12 scoring offense and No. 22 field goal percentage.

They may have been No. 4 and No. 7 in the Associated Press poll but the NET rankings, used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, have South Carolina and UConn No. 1 and No. 2.

Series history: UConn leads the all-time series 9-5, but Staley and the Gamecocks have had the upper hand of late. South Carolina is on a four-game win streak against UConn and has won five of the last six.

The first win over UConn in program history came during the 2019-20 season when the Gamecocks won 70-52 at Colonial Life Arena. After an overtime loss in Storrs the next season, South Carolina started that four-game series win streak in November of the 2021-22 season with a 73-57 road victory. The biggest of those four wins came in April 2022, when South Carolina clinched its second national championship with a 64-49 win over UConn.

Sarah Strong vs. Joyce Edwards: There are several intriguing matchups to watch when South Carolina and UConn play Sunday, but the most exciting one might be between Strong and Edwards. They were two of the top recruits in the Class of 2024, according to espnW’s rankings. Strong was the No. 1 recruit in the class and Edwards was No. 3. The two go back to middle school, Edwards said Thursday, and she’s looking forward to competing with Strong.

The freshman phenoms have made an immediate impact on their teams. Strong is second in scoring for the Huskies with 16.1 points per game, while Edwards leads South Carolina off the bench with 12.9 points per game. Strong leads UConn in rebounding with 7.8 per game and Edwards is third for South Carolina with 4.7 per game.

ESPN’s College GameDay in attendance: The basketball version of ESPN’s classic pregame program will be live from Colonial Life Arena on Sunday. GameDay was initially slated to be in Columbia last month when the Gamecocks took on LSU, but those plans were scrapped after weather pushed the game back a day.

The two-hour show will begin at 11 a.m. on ESPN, then switch to ABC at noon before tipoff at 1 p.m. It’s the third time since 2022 that GameDay has been at Colonial Life Arena and the fifth appearance on the show for the Gamecocks.

Doors to Colonial Life Arena will open at 10:30 a.m. for fans interested in viewing the show in person.

Predictions

ESPN’s matchup predictor gives South Carolina a 61.6% chance of beating UConn. Bart Torvik, a basketball analytics website, lists the Gamecocks as two-point favorites as well as a 60% chance of winning.
