How to watch South Carolina WBB vs. Vanderbilt in Gamecocks’ SEC Tournament opener

South Carolina (27-3, 15-1 SEC) will face No. 8 seed Vanderbilt in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament on Friday.

The Commodores advanced Thursday afternoon after beating the Volunteers 84-76 in a second-round matchup and will now face the No. 1 seed Gamecocks, who had a double bye.

Gamecocks’ SEC Tournament history

The Gamecocks have won eight SEC Tournament titles in program history, all of which have come in the last 10 years under coach Dawn Staley.

South Carolina has an overall record of 34-25 in the SEC Tournament since the Gamecocks joined the conference in the 1991-92 season. Staley herself has a 31-8 record in the SEC Tournament as head coach at USC.

The Gamecocks are 15-1 in SEC Tournament games played in Greenville dating back 2017, making Bon Secours Wellness Arena a home away from home of sorts. USC’s sole loss in that span came in the 2019 SEC quarterfinals against Arkansas.

Series history vs. Vanderbilt

South Carolina beat Vanderbilt a week ago on the road in Nashville 82-54. The victory gave the Gamecocks 17 straight wins over the Commodores.

Vanderbilt and USC have played against each other twice in the SEC Tournament. The Commodores have won both times.

The last time came during in 2000 when the SEC Tournament was played in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Commodores won that game 80-58. Vanderbilt also beat South Carolina in the 1992 SEC Tournament.

Player to watch: Mikayla Blakes

Like South Carolina, Vanderbilt has a high-producing freshman leading the way. Mikalya Blakes is Vanderbilt’s player to watch in Friday’s matchup.

Blakes is one of the best freshmen in the country and was just named the SEC Freshman of the Year this week.

She currently leads Vanderbilt in scoring with 23.3 points per game. She finished with 19 points the last time out against the Gamecocks.

Blakes scored 24 points against Tennessee on Thursday.
