Gamecocks find shooting touch in first round
South Carolina scored a program-record 108 points in its first-round win Friday over Tennessee Tech, 108-48.
One of the highlights was the Gamecocks’ outside shooting. South Carolina hit a season-high and NCAA Tournament program-record 12 3-pointers in the win. USC was averaging just under six made 3-pointers per game coming into the matchup.
“We haven’t had that in a long time,” USC coach Dawn Staley said of the shooting success. “I think that will be the thing that allows us to create some separation when it comes to points. ... If we are hitting like that, we are a hard guard. Hopefully, we can carry that over to Sunday.”
Te-Hina Paopao and Tessa Johnson each made three 3-pointers. Paopao, the team’s leader in the 3-pointers made, had made six 3-pointers in the Gamecocks’ last seven games.
“We haven’t been shooting particularly well, especially in the SEC Tournament,” Paopao said. “So, I am happy to see the ball go through the net for all of our guards. I’m pumped to see those threes go in.”
Freshman Joyce Edwards shined in her first NCAA Tournament game, scoring 22 points off the bench. The Gamecocks set an NCAA-record with 66 bench points.
A look at the Hoosiers
Indiana won its seventh straight first-round tournament game with a 76-68 win over No. 8 Utah at Colonial Life Arena.
The game was tied 31-31 at halftime before the Hoosiers took control in the second half.
Yarden Garzon scored 17 points and Shay Ciezki added 16 for the Hoosiers, who won 20 games for the 10th straight season.
Indiana entered the tournament after losing three of their last four games, including to Southern Cal in the Big 10 Tournament.
Garzon leads the team in scoring at 14.6 points a game. Three others are averaging double figures in scoring — Ciezki (11.8), Sydney Parrish (11.8) and Karoline Striplin (10.1).
Parrish and USC’s Paopao were teammates for two seasons at Oregon before both decided to transfer.
South Carolina vs. Indiana history
This will be the seventh meeting between the two teams. Indiana defeated the Gamecocks, 71-57, on Nov. 18, 2019, at a tournament in the Virgin Islands. It was the only loss that season for the Gamecocks. That 2019-20 season was cut short because of the COVID pandemic.
Last year, the Hoosiers rallied from a 22-point deficit before losing to the Gamecocks, 79-75. USC’s Raven Johnson hit the game-clinching 3-pointer in that matchup.
“I’m going to be honest. I’ve watched them a little bit. I haven’t really dug into them a whole lot as far as I know their pieces are a little bit different,” Indiana coach Teri Moren said Friday of the Gamecocks. “A great amount of respect for them. I can tell you this from a year ago and just knowing our players. Whoever is ahead of us — because I have a great staff — we will have a really great scouting report. We will be prepared. And then it always comes down to doing all the things. You gotta hit shots. You gotta be able to guard at a high level. You gotta be able to rebound. And then we’ll see how we stack up with them.”
