Former Gamecock Tiffany Mitchell waived by WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces
Former South Carolina women’s basketball star Tiffany Mitchell was waived by the Las Vegas Aces on Monday afternoon.
The move came after the Aces made a trade to acquire NaLyssa Smith from the Dallas Wings. The Aces also waived Liz Kitley as a result of the trade.
Las Vegas’ decision to waive Mitchell ends the short-lived reunion of Mitchell and her former teammate and Gamecock legend A’ja Wilson. The two overlapped for two seasons at South Carolina (2014-15 and 2015-16).
Mitchell signed with the Aces back on February 8. She played in 16 games for the Aces, starting two. Mitchell averaged 3.7 points and 1.8 rebounds in just over 13 minutes per game with the Aces. The Aces are currently 8-8.
Teaming up with Mitchell again this season was an “automatic yes,” Wilson said earlier this month.
This is Mitchell’s 10th season in the WNBA after she was drafted No. 9 overall in the 2016 WNBA Draft. Mitchell spent seven seasons with the Fever before playing with the Minnesota Lynx for the 2023 season. Mitchell’s 2024 campaign with the Connecticut Sun was cut short after missing the second half of the season while recovering from sepsis and abdominal issues.
Mitchell had an illustrious four years during her time at South Carolina. She was a three-time All-American, three-time All-SEC player and won the SEC Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons (2013-14 and 2014-15). Mitchell’s No. 25 jersey was retired in 2023, making her the first player of the Dawn Staley era to receive the honor.
