South Carolina women’s basketball leapfrogs Texas in latest Top 25
South Carolina women’s basketball has moved in the Associated Press Top 25 poll for the first time in over a month.
Dawn Staley and the Gamecocks (17-1, 4-0 SEC) are ranked No. 2 in Monday’s poll.
South Carolina has been No. 3 in the rankings for the last six weeks (five polls). The Gamecocks opened the season at No. 2 and stayed there until they were beaten by Texas on Nov. 27.
As fate would have it, South Carolina moved up in this week’s AP poll as a result of Texas’ loss to then-No. 12 LSU on Sunday. Texas dropped to No. 4 and LSU rose to No. 6 in Monday’s poll.
The top five teams in women’s college basketball are currently: No. 1 UConn, No. 2 South Carolina, No. 3 UCLA, No. 4 Texas and No. 5 Vanderbilt.
South Carolina and Texas (18-1, 3-1 SEC) will play a rematch of their November contest this week. Colonial Life Arena will play host to a top-five matchup between the Gamecocks and Longhorns on Thursday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
