Dawn Staley and the No. 3 South Carolina women’s basketball team will be without two of its starters on Monday night vs Texas A&M.

Ta’Niya Latson and Agot Makeer were listed as out on Sunday’s official SEC injury report. Their exact injuries are not known.

Latson and Makeer both left South Carolina’s most recent game on Thursday vs Auburn.

Makeer played just four minutes in the win. She subbed out at the 6:18 mark of the first half and didn’t return to the bench until the second quarter. When Makeer came back to South Carolina’s bench she was walking slowly and appeared to be wearing something that looked like a heating pad wrapped around her waist/upper hip area. Staley didn’t share specifics on Makeer’s injury or issue after the game.

“She’s in pain,” Staley said Thursday. “That’s a bummer, but we’ll get her back home and get it checked out.”

Latson played 16 minutes in the first half but was absent in the second half of the Auburn game. The star guard missed the first three games of SEC play with an ankle injury, but she didn’t show any signs of that bothering her against Auburn. Staley also didn’t give any specifics as to what was wrong with Latson after the game, but did say it was a decision she and her staff made.

“She’s not feeling well either, so we just decided to hold her out,” Staley said.

What it means for Texas A&M matchup

The Gamecocks will, once again, need their bench guards to step up on Monday night with Latson and Makeer out.

Sophomore Maddy McDaniel and freshman Ayla McDowell did exactly that vs Auburn.

McDaniel played a team-high 28 minutes in the win. She scored nine points (one shy of tying her career-high) and logged six assists and four steals. McDaniel’s assists and steals marks led the team against Auburn and also tied career highs. McDowell finished with eight points that included a pair of 3-pointers. She also nabbed three steals and two rebounds.

Latson is South Carolina’s second-leading scorer with 15.2 points per game. While McDaniel and McDowell can help score a few points off the bench, the Gamecocks will need an extra boost from its starters as well. Players like Tessa Johnson or Joyce Edwards can help fill Latson’s offensive production.

Makeer recently moved into the starting lineup in place of Madina Okot. With Makeer and Latson (a regular starter) out, South Carolina could move McDaniel and Okot into the starting lineup against Texas A&M.
