Will injuries keep Ta’Niya Latson, Agot Makeer on the sidelines for Gamecocks?
South Carolina women’s basketball will be without two key players again in its next game.
Both Agot Makeer and Ta’Niya Latson are listed as out on Thursday’s SEC injury report. The No. 3 Gamecocks play Mississippi State on Thursday at Colonial Life Arena (6:30 p.m., SEC Network).
Latson was initially listed as questionable on Wednesday night’s report.
On Wednesday, Latson and Makeer were both seen shooting free throws with the team at the end of practice. Latson was notably wearing a brace on her left knee. Both Latson and Makeer missed South Carolina’s game vs Texas A&M on Monday due to injury.
Before the Texas A&M game on Monday, USC’s radio broadcast said both players were out with leg injuries and there was no timetable for their return. ESPN’s pregame broadcast was slightly more specific, saying both players were dealing with lower-leg injuries.
Both players left South Carolina’s matchup with Auburn last week early with injuries.
Makeer subbed out at the 6:18 mark of the first half and never returned to the game. She went to the locker room and eventually returned in the second quarter, walking slowly and wearing what appeared to be something like a heating pad wrapped around her waist/upper hip area. Latson played 16 minutes in the first half but was absent in the second half of the Auburn game. Staley said after the win Latson wasn’t feeling well so they decided to hold her out.
This isn’t the first time this season both Latson and Makeer have missed time due to injury related issues. Makeer missed five games with a concussion earlier this season and Latson missed the first three games of SEC play with an ankle sprain.
Makeer’s injury comes just after she’d be moved into South Carolina’s starting five. The guard has spent most of her freshman year coming off the bench for the Gamecocks but moved into the starting lineup in place of Madina Okot three games ago against Vanderbilt.
With both Makeer and Latson out South Carolina will, once again, have to rely on bench guards Maddy McDaniel and Ayla McDowell to help fill the gap in production. Staley commended both McDaniel and McDowell for how they were able to do just that when Latson and Makeer went down against Auburn.
