Documentary shines light on women’s basketball, South Carolina’s 2024 championship
South Carolina women’s basketball fans will have a chance to relive the Gamecocks’ 2024 national championship season starting Friday.
Dawn Staley’s program will be featured in a documentary titled “The Moment” that is now streaming on the Tubi network. The documentary chronicles on the growth of women’s basketball in the last 50 years with a focus on Staley and the Gamecocks in the 2023-24 season. Staley said she did lots of interviews for the documentary and hasn’t seen the final product, but looks forward to watching it.
“I think it’s pretty good,” Staley said Friday. “It was a season that captured what was taking place, without knowing it was going to end that way. But knowing that it ended that way, [it] was pretty historical it could be captured in that way. So, I’m looking forward to seeing it and just the entire history of our game. … women’s basketball, not just South Carolina. How we got here as a sport.”
South Carolina had a historic year in that season. The Gamecocks went 38-0 and defeated Iowa to win the program’s third national championship. They were the first team to go undefeated and win a title since UConn in 2016 and just the 10th team to ever achieve the feat.
USC was ranked No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 poll every week of the regular season. The championship also cemented Staley as the only Black head coach to win three national titles.
Gamecocks legends A’ja Wilson and Aliyah Boston are part of the documentary, per the Hollywood Reporter. They’re joined by other big names in women’s hoops like Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie, Sue Bird, Geno Auriemma and Rebecca Lobo.
“’The Moment’ is exactly the kind of story we’re proud to champion at Tubi, where culture, sport and storytelling collide,” Tubi senior vice president of content acquisitions and partnerships Sam Harowitz told The Hollywood Reporter. “This film spotlights Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks’ trailblazing journey, taking viewers on a deep dive honoring the pioneers, players, and defining moments that reshaped the landscape of women’s basketball.”
