Dawn Staley was issued a stunning reminder of why her personal philosophy – living every day to its fullest – is great advice.

Staley took a picture with one of her heroes, Philadelphia legend Moses Malone, on Saturday at Bradley International Airport in Connecticut. Staley was returning from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame ceremonies, where she was a presenter for Lisa Leslie.

On Sunday, Staley woke up to the news that Malone, 60, was dead.

“Truly sad hearing about Moses Malone’s passing (Sunday) morning,” Staley said. “Having just spoken to him (Saturday) morning and sharing a moment about playing 3 on 3 with him years ago, it breaks my heart.”

Malone died in his sleep in Norfolk, Va., where he was scheduled to play in a charity golf tournament. The 6-foot-10 three-time NBA MVP left a permanent impression on Philadelphia, where he led the 76ers to the 1983 NBA championship.

Staley shared her picture with Malone on Twitter. “Thank you Mo for making me smile & laugh as you have so many. #RIP,” Staley wrote.
