Tiffany Mitchell named first-team AP All-American
Tiffany Mitchell will begin her senior season the same way she ended her junior season – as a consensus first-team All-American.
Mitchell was one of five players on The Associated Press’ All-America team announced Tuesday, which was expected. Her name has been a constant on all-star lists in preseason magazines and polls, which also named the two-time SEC Player of the Year the preseason pick to win a third.
“It means a lot. Growing up as a kid you want to put your best foot forward and take those steps in your career,” the South Carolina star said. “Knowing that some of the hard work is paying off is definitely a good feeling.”
She was joined by three future opponents on the list – Connecticut’s Breanna Stewart, the two-time National Player of the Year; UConn’s Moriah Jefferson; and Ohio State’s Kelsey Mitchell. The Gamecocks will play each of the two teams in the regular season, with the Buckeyes coming to Columbia on Friday for the season opener.
Sophomore A’ja Wilson received votes, as did Tennessee’s Diamond DeShields.
NOTE: The Gamecocks were picked by the SEC coaches to win the league championship, as they were by the media. Mitchell was also named SEC Preseason Player of the Year.
Wilson received votes for player of the year and made the preseason all-SEC first team. Alaina Coates also made the first team.
