Lexington’s Stephenson ousted in marathon match at USGA Women’s Amateur
Chia Yen Wu, a 13-year- old from Chinese Taipei, used short-game magic to stay alive and outlasted Lexington’s Lauren Stephenson in 30 holes in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Women’s Amateur on Friday in San Diego, Calif.
Wu stayed alive with a 69-foot birdie putt on the 26 th hole and won on the 30th after Stephenson hooked her drive and had to lay up.
The 12 extra holes made the quarterfinal battle the longest in USGA history.
Wu had a 2-up lead after three holes before Stephenson evened the match with wins at No. 4 and No. 9. Stephenson won holes 10 and 12 to take a 2-up lead. Wu won holes No. 15 and No. 17 to force the playoff.
