Why the number 100 keeps coming up for Phil Mickelson this week in Augusta
On Friday, Phil Mickelson will play his 100th career round at Augusta National Golf Club. It’s kind of his number of the week.
“I didn’t even know that (100 round statistic) until you brought it up,” Mickelson said.
Everyone at the Masters this week seems to know the other story about 100 surrounding Mickelson. That one came out last week when country music singer Jake Owens recounted on a podcast with Barstool Sports a story from Jordan Spieth’s wedding in which Owens was heckling Mickelson for the poor quality of play in Mickelson’s head-to-head televised match with Tiger Woods.
“I was like, ‘Hey Phil, you owe me (expletive) $29.99 … for wasting four hours of my life with the (expletive) golf I’ve ever seen!,” Owens said. “I want my $29.99 and apologize to me for some (expletive) golf!’” Owen said. “He pulls out a wad … and grabs a $100 and he’s like, ‘Yeah, I won 90,000 of these yesterday. Take $100 and go (expletive) yourself.’ Right in my face.”
Mickelson confirmed all the essential facts of the exchange without the colorful language here.
“It happened exactly like he said. Jake nailed it, verbatim,” Mickelson said. “Rickie Fowler and I were talking, he was right there, Jake had a bunch of buddies behind him and thought he would show off a little bit and I kind of shot him down, so, yeah. I can’t tell it any better than he can. You know, it’s much better coming from him. I didn’t know he was going to talk about it publicly, but yeah, I mean, it’s all true.”
On Wednesday, Mickelson warmed up on the practice range with a $100 bill hanging from his pants pocket.
Mickelson, 49, is a 45-to-1 long shot to win his fourth green jacket.
