Three key Masters storylines
Ominous forecast forces early start
Hoping to avoid its first Monday finish since 1983 and sixth overall, the Masters moved up the final round to 7:30 a.m. and will send the players off in groups of three rather than pairings of two. It will also begin players on Nos. 1 and Nos. 10 in order to expedite the finish. The leaders will tee off at 9:20 a.m.
“The safety of everyone on our grounds is paramount,” said club chairman Fred Ridley said in a statement. “We also believe the earlier start will give us the best opportunity to complete the Masters on Sunday. This decision should benefit everyone – the players, our patrons and our fans watching around the world. Given the competitiveness and drama of this year’s tournament, we look forward to an exciting conclusion tomorrow.”
This will be the first time the Masters has started its fourth round so early on Sunday. In previous years, play has started early but only as a way to finish an earlier, postponed round. The Masters finished on a Monday in 1983, 1973, 1961, 1938 and 1936.
Toe talk
Kevin Kisner’s longtime caddie, Duane Bock, is playing hurt this week. Bock has broken toe, which hasn’t made Augusta National’s hills any easier.
“He’s a wuss,” joked Kisner, who bought Bock a truck in 2017. “No, he’s out there, he’s struggling, this isn’t the easiest place in the world to walk, but he’s not going to miss it. So he says it’s getting better every day, and I think he was struggling a little bit today.”
Kisner, an Aiken native, is nearing a decade with Bock as his caddie.
Tiger’s pep talk
Tiger Woods’ round wasn’t going great early Saturday, and then came the fifth hole. Woods was even par for the day at the point and had just missed makeable birdie putts on Nos. 3 and 4. Then he hit driver off the tee at the 495-yard par-4, and the shot went in the bunker.
That’s when he said this under his breath but within earshot of dozen or so patrons: “Trust your (expletive) instincts you stupid (expletive). … It’s already cost you three strokes.”
That was part of a two-minute pep talk he gave himself, focusing on trusting his own decisions and peppered with that same expletive. Woods held his hand near his mouth the entire time and his words were only audible to those nearest him.
They also seemed to work. After a bogey on No. 5, Woods birdied Nos. 6 and 7 and 8 to get to 8-under par and with two shots of the lead at 4:05 p.m. He then missed a short birdie putt on No. 8.
What is the Augusta weather forecast?
There is an 80 percent chance of rain with the possibility of severe thunderstorms in the afternoon. The high temperature is expected to be 82 degrees.
What is the Masters payout?
For the first time in history, the Masters winner will get more than $2 million, a check for $2.07 million to be exact. Second place is worth $1.24 million, and the tournament’s total purse is $11.5 million.
