Sydney Legacy pulls away in Columbia city women’s golf tournament
Sydney Legacy, competing in the tournament for the first time, took command of the Sonic Columbia City Women’s Golf Championship on Wednesday at The Woodlands.
Legacy followed her opening 70 with a 4-under-par 68 in Wednesday’s second round for a two-day total of 6-under 138 and will take a seven-stroke advantage over four-time champion Kelli Murphy into Thursday’s final 18 holes.
Legacy, who recently completed her freshman year at Seminole State (Fla.), is no stranger to success. As part of Lexington High’s powerhouse, she won the 2013 Class 4A individual title and her other championships include the CGA’s 2012 Twin State Junior Girls. In college this year, she led her team to the national junior college title and finished second in the individual competition.
Murphy, who finished her freshman year at Auburn, followed her opening 73 with an even-par 72 Wednesday and is the only player within striking distance of the leader. Murphy has won the city title four of the past five years.
Thursday’s final round begins at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start.
