The Masters is moving to November for 2020: New dates set for golf major
The Masters is not taking place this week as was originally planned, but it does appear that golf’s most famous event will happen in 2020.
New “intended dates” for the Masters Tournament were released Monday morning — the day the event was originally scheduled to begin — and it’s now set for Nov. 9-15, according to the Augusta National Golf Club.
“While more details will be shared in the weeks and months to come, we, like all of you, will continue to focus on all mandated precautions and guidelines to fight against the Coronavirus,” Augusta National said in a statement. “Along the way, we hope the anticipation of staging the Masters Tournament in the fall brings a moment of joy to the Augusta community and all those who love the sport.”
In addition to the Masters, one of the four majors: The U.S. Open will take place Sept. 14-20 and the PGA Championship will be held Aug. 3-9. The Open Championship, also known as the British Open, has been canceled.
In a joint statement, the world’s golf leagues said: “We want to reiterate that Augusta National Golf Club, European Tour, LPGA, PGA of America, PGA TOUR, The R&A and USGA collectively value the health and well-being of everyone, within the game of golf and beyond, above all else. We encourage everyone to follow all responsible precautions and make effort to remain healthy and safe.”
The Masters will take place during a busy time for sports fans as football season will be in full swing in mid-November. The NFL will have a full slate of games that week, as will college football.
Around the Southeast, Clemson is slated to host The Citadel on Nov. 14, while South Carolina is set to play at LSU. Georgia hosts Tennessee and Auburn hosts UMass those same Saturdays.
The Saturday before the week of the Masters will also be busy, with Clemson traveling to face Notre Dame, South Carolina hosting Georgia and Auburn hosting Arkansas.
“We want to emphasize that our future plans are incumbent upon favorable counsel and direction from health officials,” Augusta National said in its statement. “Provided that occurs and we can conduct the 2020 Masters, we intend to invite those professionals and amateurs who would have qualified for our original April date and welcome all existing ticket holders to enjoy the excitement of Masters week.”
