Amateur golf back in action in SC after coronavirus layoff. Women’s champion crowned

Anna Morgan, a Furman golfer from Spartanburg, celebrated the return of high-level amateur golf to South Carolina by winning the Women’s State Amateur on Wednesday at Columbia Country Club.

Morgan rolled in a birdie putt on the second playoff hole to edge future Furman teammate Savannah Hylton, a rising high school senior from Hilton Head Island. The pair tied at even par 216 after three rounds and finished a shot better than Emma Schimpf (Daniel Island) and Molly Hardwick (Lexington).

Morgan, a rising sophomore, made it two-for-two in tournaments following a three-month shutdown due to the coronavirus outbreak. She won the Carolinas Women’s Amateur last week in Bermuda Run, North Carolina.

Kerry Rutan (Charleston) won the State Division, played from shorter tees, and Nancy Dodge (Prosperity) captured the Super Senior title for players 65 and older.

In the S.C. Golf Association’s Junior Championship at the Tradition Golf Club at Pawleys Island, Trey Crenshaw (Lancaster) earned the title at 9-under-par 207.
