Augusta weather sidetracks Masters Par 3 Contest. Here’s what forecast looks like
Weather is wearing on Augusta National.
The course was closed on Wednesday just before 11:30 a.m. which, at least temporarily, delayed the Par 3 Contest.
The club announced that the gate would reopen at 12:45 p.m. and the Par 3 Contest would begin at 1 p.m.
“We don’t have any information on that right now,” a representative from the club told The State as to whether the Par 3 Contest would be canceled entirely.
The Par 3 Contest has not been played since 2019, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2017 event was the first to ever be canceled due to rain since the event began in 1960.
England’s Matt Wallace won the 2019 iteration of the Par 3 Contest with a 5-under, 22. The winner of the event has never subsequently won the Masters the same week.
Weather forced a suspension of play and a course closure during practice rounds on Tuesday. Players mostly worked through their respective exhibitions early in the morning to combat potential delays.
First round play at the Masters is slated to begin on Thursday morning at 8 a.m. It will be broadcast on ESPN from 3 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.
Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama is the defending champion. He became the first player from Asia to don the ceremonial green jacket given to winners after he finished 10-under on the tournament. Former Wake Forest golfer Will Zalatoris finished second at 9-under.
South Carolina native Dustin Johnson won the 2020 edition of the Masters. Johnson is a Dutch Fork alum and played his college golf at Coastal Carolina. Other players with South Carolina ties include Aiken’s Kevin Kisner and Greenville’s Lucas Glover, who played collegiately at Clemson.
Five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods is also expected to return to competition this week after missing the last 14 months due to injuries sustained in a severe car accident.
