A handful of golfers went going home Friday.
Players had to battle the elements Thursday between the wind and rain that drifted into the morning and forced tee times back 30 minutes. Windy conditions remained Friday.
The final cut fell at 4-over-par 148, with 52 players made the cut from a starting field of 91.
Some of the more notable names who missed the cut included Zach Johnson (+5); Sam Burns (+5); Brooks Koepka (+6); Jordan Spieth (+6); Abraham Ancer (+7); Xander Schauffele (+7); Justin Rose (+8); Bryson DeChambeau (+10); Fred Couples (+10). Here’s the full leaderboard and list of who missed the cut.
How is the Masters cut determined?
The cut was initially instituted at the Masters in 1957. It entailed trimming the field from its starting size to include the lowest 40 players with ties over the final 36 holes of the tournament. That has since changed over the years.
From 1962 until 2012, the cut was adjusted to account for the top 44 players and those within 10 shots of the lead. Between 2012 and 2019, the cut formed around the top 50 players and ties, along with those within 10 shots of the lead.
The most recent change came in 2020, adjusting the Masters cut to include just the top 50 players with ties.
What was the 2021 cut at Augusta National?
The cut during the 2021 event fell at 3-over par 147 after two rounds of play. That came just one year after it was drawn at even 144 — the lowest cut line in Masters history — during a tournament played in November due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The cut over the last five tournaments has been an average of 3.4-over. That number was as high as 6-over in 2016 and 2017, marking the highest cut line since it was drawn at 7-over in 1987, 1988 and 1989.
